In the drawing room of the Caplan home, a close circle of friends gathers for what seems to be an ordinary evening. Light conversation, jokes, memories, a musical cigarette box opened by chance — and suddenly the familiar comfort begins to crack.
One careless word awakens a past that everyone would rather leave undisturbed. A year earlier, Martin Caplan died under mysterious circumstances. His death has long since been explained, endured, and almost forgotten. But the more insistently the guests try to establish the truth, the more dangerous each new question becomes.
John Boynton Priestley’s play is a subtle psychological drama about the price of frankness, about lies that seem to save, and about a truth capable of destroying everything people have accepted for years as friendship, love, and decency.
